The Project
The main purpose of the Green Narratives: Literary Voices from the Amazon project is to bring public awareness to the relevance and vitality of Amazonian cultures. We aim to share the literary expressions of Amazon dwellers with a larger international community in order to draw attention to the region’s incredibly rich cultural traditions, beyond its unique natural wealth. In addition to showcasing these “literary voices,” we wish to foster a lively debate with a wide audience around related issues, such as environmental rights and non-traditional knowledge.
This website seeks to become a virtual space for the wide dissemination and discussion of literary works from Amazonia. While most current debates around this region, both within and outside academia, come from ecological and scientific perspectives, and those that do focus on cultural aspects are mainly based on textual representations of the Amazon by outsiders (Europeans, other Latin Americans, etc.), this project will shed light on the Amazon dwellers’ (Yanomami, Guaraní, etc.) remarkable literary production. Given the urgency of the situation, clearly illustrated by the assassination of Indigenous environmental activists under Jair Bolsonaro, it is crucial to facilitate public discussions about Amazonian culture in order to complement mainstream discourses about the region’s imminent destruction and to listen to how its own people often use narratives to engage with pressing issues such as cultural and ecological survival. This approach will thus not only lead the audience to question existing definitions of literature (since Amazonian literary expressions are both oral and written, collective and individual) but also to acknowledge the impressive linguistic and geographic diversity of the area, which contains more than 330 languages in nine countries.
